I was fresh out of the university when in 2012, the American hit reality TV series Survivor made the local headlines. The show's long-time host, Jeff Probst, in a live broadcast of a season finale, announced that their upcoming new season had just finished filming in the Philippines—in the islands of Caramoan, whose popularity then was far from what it is now.

Before the well-known U.S. version, several Survivor franchises already used the islands for their location, including the French, Israeli, Bulgarian, Serbian, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Belgian and Indian editions. It was, however, America’s top-rated Survivor: Philippines that catalyzed Caramoan’s tourism potential, locally and globally.

“May iba pa palang Aguinaldo?” asked Bryan, a friend of mine who was surprised upon learning that an Aguinaldo, whose first name was not Emilio, exists in the country’s written history. “Yes Sir, pinsan s’ya ni Emilio Aguinaldo, hindi lang siya ganun kakilala tulad ni Emilio na naging presidente natin,” the shrine staff eagerly replied.

Baldomero Aguinaldo was not among the most talked about historical figures not because of the lack of significant contribution, but only because of being overshadowed by the prominence of Gen.
"Community-based tourism" (or CBT) is a part of the industry that highlights the significance of community participation and empowerment in the development of tourism activities. It puts the local community of a certain tourist spot—the often overlooked stakeholders—at the heart of the development to promote not only the tourist destination they live in, but also the quality of life and sustainable living among them.

The Philippine Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) invited me, along with other travel bloggers and journalists, to cover the Community-based Tourism Workshop that they would host in Sagay City, north of Negros Occidental province. The three-day event was partaken by different tourism stakeholders, which included local tour guides, site attendants, boat operators and the city government’s tourism personnel among others.

As part of the media group, we toured the coastal city and visited the tourist attractions that the workshop participants represent.
The Mayon Legend

Behind Mayon Volcano’s near-perfect cone elegance, like many Philippine folk tales about a particular locality, is quite a tragic love story of a beautiful woman and a gallant man. The brave Panganoron (or Ulap in some versions) and the lovely Magayon met one day, in a knight in shining armor moment, when Magayon slipped and fell into the deep part of a river while bathing; Panganoron, a warrior from another tribe, passes by and saves her from drowning. Magayon’s rescue started a romance that eventually led to Panganoron asking Makusog, Magayon’s father and the tribal chieftain, of his daughter's hand in marriage.

Upon hearing the news of the wedding, Magayon’s long time suitor, the villain Pagtuga, kidnapped Makusog and threatened Magayon of killing her father if she would not wed him instead. Magayon ended up marrying Pagtuga. But on the wedding day, Panganoron arrived and a bloody skirmish ensued. Magayon was shot in the chest by a poisonous arrow that went astray. Panganoron, while kneeling beside her dying sweetheart, was fatally attacked by one of Pagtuga’s men.

Makusog buried his daughter and her lover together to honor their bond. It was at the exact gravesite, the legend goes, where the symmetric mound of 2,463 meters above sea level—the highest point of Bicol Region and the Philippines’ most active volcano—had emerged inch by inch as years passed. People believe that when Mount Mayon rumbles and is about to erupt, it is Pagtuga bothering Magayon. When it is calm, Panganoron is cuddling her lady. When clouds cover the volcano’s tip, the mythical star-crossed lovers are sharing a kiss.

READ ALSO: At Peace in Bulusan Lake

Another belief is that Mount Mayon only shows itself to town visitors who are pure in heart. Panganoron, the cloud, covers his beloved Magayon to protect her whenever there is an evil spirit around. On my recent trip to Albay, Mount Mayon appeared in full. I am not sure about the “pure in heart,” but I am certain that we had in us the purest intention when we went there. I was with the Tourism Promotions Board, the marketing arm of the Department of Tourism, to not just enjoy, but to promote Bicol Region as well. We went there, along with other writers and travel influencers, to spread awareness about the region’s readiness to accept tourists again—for them to gaze upon, among others, Bicol’s crown jewel after the trying times of the pandemic.

Mount Mayon was nowhere in sight when we landed at the Bicol International Airport in Daraga. It was a gloomy afternoon. But Mayon eventually surfaced after we left the airport and reached Sumlang Lake—a once neglected private property, now one of Albay’s favorite destinations among locals and tourists. Eight Albay municipalities (out of 18) surround Mount Mayon. The lake park, nestled in the town of Camalig, has one of the best vantage points to relish the volcano’s incredible symmetry.

Sumlang Lake jump-started our trip around southern Bicol. The next days were allotted for Sorsogon and Masbate provinces and then back in Albay for another rendezvous with Mayon before we headed back to Manila. While on the first day at the lake park we savored Mayon’s allure from afar, we aimed to get near the volcano during the tail end of the six-day trip and it was no easy feat—it required an ATV (all-terrain vehicle) ride that passes along volcanic dirt roads, gushing streams and boulder-strewn slopes. Literally not a walk in the park.

READ ALSO: Treasures of Ticao Island

Mayon ATV tours started in the 2000s. Several trails were developed and the number of trails adds up every time Mayon erupts and leaves behind stunning formations of the lava flow. Each trail has its own distinguishing features, varied difficulty levels and different ATV rental rates, but they all share a panoramic vista of Mayon on the horizon, a sight that beckons riders to rev up the engine and zoom toward her as fast as they can.

We took the 18-kilometer Black Lava Trail. I felt the excitement right away when one of the technicians kickstarted the engine of the single-seater ATV that I selected from the long line of available rides; the two-seaters were apparently for those who were not used to driving by themselves. We navigated the trail in a queue. No racing, no overtaking. We were quite a big group. Our trail marshals were making sure that no one was lagging too far behind. When we reached the first gushing creek following the dirt path that ensued when we left the ATV camp, I felt the adrenaline rushing within. I wanted to get drenched. I wanted to feel the adventure.

The dirt trail itself, even at times without Mayon in view, was a pleasant sight. Some parts were dotted with pine trees. Some were short creeks that needed to be crossed, while some were longer and wider that needed to be driven through opposing the direction of the streaming waters.

After more than two hours of hearing nothing but the cacophony of rumbling engines and occasional screams of excitement, we arrived at the Lava Wall camp. We alighted our ATVs and rushed for the trekking as it was already getting dark. The trek clocked about five minutes before we reached the base of the wall made up of volcanic debris—the Black Lava Wall was the aftermath of the 2006 eruption.

We scaled the stacked lava boulders that, I assume, towers about 10 to 15 meters. At the top was a paved helipad surrounded by a sea of sharp, wobbling rocks that extends as far as the base of the volcano. The helipad, says one of our local guides, is owned by Misibis Bay Resort and uses it to bring their guests closer to Mayon. Some sources say it is used for rescue missions during Mayon disasters.

Black Lava Wall was once a terrifying sight—burning orange semi-liquid rocks cascading down as the beautiful but deadly volcano released its wrath. Today, the remnant of an eruption is a platform for a dramatic 360-degree view of Albay Gulf and Legazpi City’s skyline on one side and a larger vista of Mount Mayon on the other. Right in front of us, only about six kilometers away, was Mayon once again uncovered by clouds. The last minutes of sunset added a charm, a fiery glow to the clouds floating around the volcano’s pointed crest.

To behold Mount Mayon’s literally smoking hot charm and to be able to touch the sediments that it had coughed up in the past was exceptional.
The early wake-up call shortened what could have been a sound sleep at last. The day before Ticao Island, we got up much earlier since we had to leave Albay for Sorsogon for the phenomenal yet exhausting whale shark interaction in Donsol, to cover the regional travel fair in Sorsogon City—this was a media tour with the Tourism Promotions Board—and thereafter attend the event’s dinner party that lasted until before midnight. It was a long, hectic day. The next day’s early call time was because of the lengthy nautical distance between Ticao Island and Dancalan Beach (Donsol) where we spent the night after the party.

Museo Sorsogon is a relatively new tourist spot. It made rounds on the internet last year with the news of its inauguration—when the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), who handled the curatorial development, turned over the museum to the provincial government of Sorsogon. It garnered the netizens' attention presumably because of the museum building's visually appealing colonial period architecture.

Museo Sorsogon was the old provincial jail and courthouse located at the back of Sorsogon's capitol building. The Public Works department (DPWH) restored the erstwhile detention facility of early 1900s structure as part of its conversion into a local museum that opened doors to the public on March 2021.

Earlier that day, we got up in the wee hours to transfer from our hotel in Legazpi to Sorsogon. We needed to reach Donsol at around seven in the morning for breakfast, and afterwards, the phenomenal yet somehow exhausting Whale Shark Interaction activity that usually lasts for three hours or so. Next, after lunch, we attended the opening of the Regional Travel Fair at the convention center in Sorsogon City—this was a media tour with the Tourism Promotions Board and fellow travel bloggers. We then left for a while at around 2:00 PM for Buhatan River, located a few minutes away from the event's venue.

While the shortened sleep and the whale shark encounters tire me out in the morning—several jumps into the sea, trying not to be outswam by the vanishing whale sharks, then treading back into the boat while drenched under the sun for about three hours—cruising Buhatan River in the afternoon did the exact opposite.

We reached Bulusan Volcano Natural Park hours before sunset. From the park entrance, a 10-minute ride aboard the park's shuttle service brought us to the gates of Bulusan Lake; the short ride passed along a 1.7-kilometer pavement that cuts through a forest. Few meters past the lake's welcome signage, the sight of the 27-hectare lake immediately ensued. It did not demand even a slight trekking effort in order to see its beauty—a freshwater lagoon surrounded by thick foliage at the foot of an active volcano, the lake's eponym Mount Bulusan.

I barely slept on the first night of our six-day tour around Bicol Region's ALMASOR (Albay, Masbate, Sorsogon). Our call time was 4:30 in the morning, since we had to travel for an hour from our hotel in Legazpi going to Donsol, take our breakfast there and catch our 7:00 AM schedule at the Donsol Tourist Center. Morning is the best time to experience the whale sharks, according to our boatman.

It took the drive almost two hours from Central Mindanao University in Maramag—where we partook in several agri-tourism activities—to reach Taglucop Strawberry Hills in Kitaotao, farther south of Bukidnon. The sun had just set by the time we arrived.

Complimentary grazing platter, glasses of strawberry wine and soothing Christmas jazz playing across Taglucop's guest receiving area welcomed our group. It was early December. Taglucop's blend of their usual Valentine-y motifs and the in-season Christmas decors suited the chilly Bukidnon weather. The ambiance was utterly romantic.

I felt like a celebrity biyahero when we arrived at the TWWA Tagolwanen Handwoven shop in Malaybalay City. Three women garbed in their ethnic clothing, along with the city's tourism chief and Lorie Rago-Marte, founder and chair of Tagolwanen Women Weavers Association (TWWA), gave our group a VIP welcome—with cordial greetings and ethnic beaded leis around our necks. To me, it was an unprecedented travel experience.

Our visit to the native weavers of Bukidnon was part of the Tourism Promotions Board's program that aimed to jumpstart the travel industry amid the ongoing pandemic. I was there on a learning tour with other travel content creators and online influencers who would help spread the news on Bukidnon's tourist sites.

READ ALSO: Limitless Adventures: 9 Must-visit Places in Bukidnon

The Tagolwanen souvenir store bursts with colors, owing it to the shelves filled with various handwoven goods. But before we got to shop for an artisanal Bukidnon souvenir, Lorie oriented the group about the Tagoloanen people, their weaving tradition and the social enterprise. We were all ears while the three women weavers carried on with their craft.

"'Higala' means 'friend', so 'cucina higala' means 'a friend's kitchen'...", said Carlston Maglangit of the Department of Tourism (DOT)-Northern Mindanao when I asked him, as soon as we stepped out of the van for our dinner, what the unfamiliar word in the restaurant's name means. The Visayan word for friend. Cucina Higala matches the city where it stands: Cagayan de Oro, the City of Golden Friendship.

I was a bit drowsy when I embarked the Hiace that transferred us from Dahilayan Forest Park to yet another adventure park called KampoJuan. Both sites are within Manolo Fortich town, so the drive took only less than an hour, breezing across hectares of Del Monte's pineapple orchard.

The scenery composed chiefly of contiguous pineapple plants arranged in symmetry upon the expansive landscape was so monotonous that it induces sleep while onboard.
For no apparent reason, I was yearning for a staycation somewhere that would only require a short drive from home. The Philippine government also recently allowed kids outdoors which meant that my five-year-old could finally go out-of-town after being cooped up indoors for about two years. But I was not inclined to risking on a possibly crowded weekend, so the planned staycation turned into a weekday workcation.

I found Baliraya Resort by chance. I was browsing Google Maps, looking for a resort in eastern Laguna, when I stumbled upon this Bali-themed retreat. I have no basis to judge its Balinese motif as I have not yet been to Bali, but Baliraya's photos on the internet are beckoning. So, a room was booked posthaste for the next day's overnight stay.

I mentioned this in this blog's About page: Magazines played a paramount role in my adolescent life. Flipping through the glossy journals was my escape from reality during the five grueling years of pursuing my undergraduate engineering degree. Magazines have been instrumental in igniting the youthful dreams that I was lucky enough to live by now and the goals that I’m getting through as yet.

I read Appetite, Yummy and Cook when I was obsessed of becoming a restaurateur (I almost left engineering for a culinary discipline back then). I skimmed Real Living when I was mentally detailing the house that I had wished to realize when my years in the corporate world would finally bear fruit.

Being an Anglophile lead me to Mercury Drug’s Enrich—I started when Prince William and Kate Middleton graced its cover in 2011, in time of their royal wedding. Enrich encompasses an eclectic mix of topics on health, personal development, housekeeping, history and culture, latest events, sports and travel among others. It brims with subjects that feed my passions and provides information that are of great help to parents like myself, so it became a staple when I have errands to run at the drugstore.

When I started earning my own money and got hooked to traveling, I began with travel magazines. I hoarded back issues instead of what’s currently on the stand because they’re cheaper while the write-ups could still take its readers by the hand to the places written about—exactly what I needed when tons of workload impede travel plans.

I enjoy it when restaurants got magazines for dine-in customers to browse
through while having their food prepared. I became a habitué of my go-to diner along Makati Ave. for this reason. When getting myself a haircut or a once-in-a-blue-moon foot spa, I grab a magazine as soon as I enter the salon. I’m not much into vogue, but some fashion magazines have travel components too.

But I episodically pursue a minimalist lifestyle. There are occasions when I’m into Marie Kondo-ing my life and doing so entails bringing my magazine purchases to a halt. But magazines do “spark joy” that I can’t just discard even the thought of picking them up from the stand if the cover story seems compelling or educative. I trimmed down my to-buy list instead. I left myself with Enrich because it’s relatively cheap and virtually an all-in-one read, thus economical, and it’s within easy reach. I live near a Mercury Drug branch where I get baby’s essentials and my mom’s maintenance medicines, and copies of the magazine’s latest issue are stacked right at the counter so it’s hard to miss.
Safe, Swift and Smart Passage or S-PaSS is a website intended to facilitate local travel in this continuing pandemic. It serves as an online coordination platform between travelers and their destination's local government unit (LGU). S-PaSS allows LGUs to post their latest travel policies and guidelines for which travelers must check and, if necessary, apply for a travel permit prior to their trip.

S-PaSS was institutionalized by IATF as a one-stop-shop for travelers and LGUs while the country slowly revives the tourism sector amidst the continuing battle with the pandemic. As of writing, a total of 93 provinces, highly urbanized cities (HUCs), component cities and municipalities use this platform and about 3 million users have already registered. The system also indicates whether a certain LGU is using S-PaSS or not.

Eastern Laguna is a scenic drive. The towns on this side of the province lie sandwiched between the shores of Laguna Lake and the mountains of Sierra Madre, thus the refreshing lush mountain view on one side and the calming vista of the vast lake on the other. Central to these towns are its centuries-old churches erected when Philippines was under colonial rule. Churches that are rich in ecclesiastical history, cultural treasures and stories of Filipino heroism.

Here's a list of some scenic towns in Laguna to visit for the traditional Visita Iglesia.
